At HiYa Karate, we believe in
"Training for Life!"
Train for Life isn’t just our motto, but we use this phrase literally. It isn’t just about a sports season but carrying your martial arts training with you everywhere. HiYa believes that through the training of martial arts, and specifically our creed, one can develop social and physical skills that would positively benefit lifelong experiences for all involved.
HiYa Creed
- I will be respectful to my county, my family, my friends and myself
- I will be dedicated to my training and self defense
- I will make my choices with honor and integrity
- I will strive to bring out the best in myself and others
- Train for Life!
The philosophy of our integrated Martial Arts Center is rooted in Tang Soo Do or “Way of the Empty Hand”. Tang Soo Do is a composite style of Martial Art that incorporates both hard and soft components of what most people refer to as Tae Kwon Do.
Mind
Our Principles and Creed are emphasized and throughout training. During class, students engage in informative discussions and training that educates them on socially challenging topics.
Physical Techniques
We teach the foundation upon which traditional karate was formed: stances, blocking, striking, and kicking. Exercise through martial arts allows students to be active and physically fit.
Hyung Sik – Forms – Kata
Also known as forms or kata, are basic techniques brought together into patterns that teach students strategy, timing and balance while improving their comprehension and memorization skills.
Self Defense
We teach our students to avoid physical conflicts, but we also teach our students techniques on how to defend against certain circumstances through our one steps and grabbing defense curriculum. One-steps are our predetermined techniques that are taught against a punch or a kick. Our grabbing defense, another form of self defense, teaches students how to get away if someone is grabbing you. Both are taught in a controlled environment and help develop muscle memory.
Point Sparring
Students don’t begin to spar until they are a solid yellow belt in the Cobra program. While wearing protective gear, students practice controlled techniques, which resemble boxing. Students learn how to incorporate all of their martial arts knowledge from strategy to blocking and striking in order to outscore an opponent. Sparring is also part of the competition team training which students compete on the local and national level. Safety is always paramount during sparring matches.
Board Breaking
The art of board breaking helps build confidence in our students by diminishing some psychological barriers that some students may face. It helps improve focus and concentration and shows strength in our movements.
