HiYa! Karate Competition Team

HiYa Karate’s Competition Team is open to all students age 7 and up with the approval of their instructor and parents. Categories of competition include hyung-sik (forms), Kumite (point-sparring), and weapons. The main competition focus for HiYa is within the Amateur Athletic Union, but we also enjoy competing with our martial arts leagues and surrounding studios. HiYa Karate not only participates in local events, but regional and national tournaments as well.

The competition team season runs from September through July, with practices once a week. We practice forms, sparring, weapons, and focus on the mental component to sports. The team also has a fundraising committee that helps offset the costs of tournament and travel fees.

The team has achieved several successes over the years and here are a few:

Upcoming coach of the year
Over 200 medals earned in one season by 25 competitors

AAU

The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) is one of the largest non-profit volunteer sports organizations in the United States. A multi-sport organization, the AAU is dedicated exclusively to the promotion and development of amateur sports and physical fitness programs. The association has also started a Varsity Letter program that recognizes and rewards athletes for their dedication and commitment to marital arts, awarding them with a Nationally Recognized Varsity letter. There are four athletes on the HiYa Karate team that have been awarded with their varsity letter.

The students don’t only learn sportsmanship, but they make memories as they travel around to tournaments and compete.

HiYa Karate's Aware Kids Safe & Defense Program was absolutely amazing! The program encompassed personal safety, how to identify and respond to threatening situations, basic lifesaving self-defense moves, fire safety, and poison control. The material presented to the children was not used to scare them, but to teach, empower and make them aware of their surroundings. The guest speakers from the Mount Airy Fire Department and Montgomery County Police Department provided age-appropriate teachings and memorable hands-on experiences. As a parent, I was extremely impressed with the quality and content of this program and I even learned new information. I’ve referred to this program multiple times this summer as teaching moments with my son. My son takes a class at HiYa and I love watching him. The instructors know the children well and tailor the lessons to meet the needs of each child in the class. My 14 year old son has been doing martial arts for many years. He often competed in tournaments at the local, state and national level. Early in his martial arts journey he hated sparring and flat out refused to do it. In 2017 he took gold at the AAU National Tae Kwon Do tournament in sparring. From the very first time we entered the dojo we felt a true sense of community.
